May 22 Happenings at the Lewistown Public Library
Montana Weddings Exhibit
The month of May is Historic Preservation Month. Come in and enjoy the thought provoking and historic exhibit “I Do: a Cultural History of Montana Weddings”, based upon the book of the same title by Martha Kohl. Included are large photos on loan from the Montana Historical Society, wedding dresses from the Central Montana Museum, and information about different types of wedding styles throughout Montana’s history. The exhibit will be on display in the upstairs meeting room through the end of May. (Maybe we should rename this room “The Wedding Room” since our own Lora was married here last June.) A reception for the exhibit will be held on May 22, 2013 from 5-7 in conjunction with the Friends of the Library Spring Recognition Party.
Charlotte Caldwell to Present at Lewistown Public Library
Charlotte Caldwell, the author and photographer of the significant book “Visions and Voices: Montana’s One-Room Schoolhouse”, will be presenting at the Lewistown Public Library on Tuesday, May 28 at 6:00 p.m. in the Upstairs Meeting Room. Caldwell will talk about her experiences in preparing the book as well as the elements of community, architecture, society and education discussed in the book. Ivan Doig, writer of the forward for “Visions and Voices,” says that Caldwell “has achieved with her photographs and interviews [a chorus] that truly, almost miraculously, details one state’s history of rural schooling.” Please join us on May 28 at 6:00 p.m. for a glimpse at this important part of Montana’s history and earn extra credit in the adult summer reading program.
Summer Reading Program 2013: Dig Into Reading! and Groundbreaking Reads!
The Library is pleased to announce this year’s theme for the Youth Summer Reading Program: Dig Into Reading! This theme is oriented to things under the ground – geology, dinosaurs, archaeology, gardening, burrowing critters, mining and caves. There will once again be two sections – one youth and one adult. The youth will maintain reading logs with a division of two age groups: Birth to Kindergarten and First Grade – Senior High. Youth can win weekly prizes and participate in drawings for the end of the program. The adults, whose theme is “Groundbreaking Reads,” will have a participation log to track reading and programming, and will have their choice of prizes to draw from. Story times, book club discussions, presentations, scavenger hunts, a Family Trail Walk and many other activities are planned. Sign up the week of June 4th for all the information. The program runs for 8 weeks and is completed the first week of August. We look forward to seeing you!
First Groundbreaking Reads Book Discussion
Groundbreaking Reads of the 1960’s and 1970’s will be the focus of discussion on Wednesday June 12. Everyone is welcome. First, read a book published in the 1960’s or 70’s. While you are reading ask yourself “Is this book saying something new or saying it in a different way?” Be thinking back on the 60’s and 70’s era. We will discuss how the book you read reflects the time in which it was published. Everyone will give a brief overview of the book they read and tell why they think it did or did not break ground. If you are participating in the adult portion of the summer reading program you earn points by participating in the discussion. Two discussion times will be offered, noon and 6:00 pm. Just pick the time that works best with your schedule; and we will talk about books.
